The first project in our off-season of improvements here at camp took place in our Theater Arts building, which dates back to the 1920′s. Before Deerkill was a camp, it was Deerkill Park Country Club and hosted families that came up from the city on the weekends to stay at the Deerkill Park bungalow colony across the street. For nearly a century, children would come enjoy the large pool and play in what is now the Deerkill Theater Arts building. This winter, we made some renovations and restored the hardwood floors to their original condition, as seen below. We look forward to seeing our campers dance, act and perform in the new Theater Arts studio this summer.

The results of our T-Shirt design contest are in and we’re excited to reveal the winning entry for the 2011 Deerkill Day Camp T-Shirt design below. Congratulations to Jill Bury who did a wonderful job incorporating the camp year (’11) with our camp name and enduring deer image. Look for all of our campers and staff to be sporting this design this summer.

Paving has been completed, Theater Arts renovated, 6 new trees planted, and today after nearly a century the original office receives a makeover…

Same camp, new office!

Cooking Added as Specialty
Based on feedback received in parent and camper surveys over the past few years, we ve decided to add Cooking as a new Specialty program here at Deerkill. This will be our 16th Specialty area following the addition of our Video program in 2009. We have already hired a Cooking Head who brings years of experience teaching cooking in a camp setting. Campers will prepare a variety of age-appropriate meals while learning more about the benefits of a healthy and nutritious diet.
New Healthy Menu Items and Changes
We have added several healthy food items to our menu as listed below:
1. Turkey and tuna will be available on a daily basis as a cold-lunch alternative.
2. We will be replacing our dessert options of chocolate pudding and jello with a daily selection of yogurt cups and fresh fruit. Cookies, ice pops or ice cream sandwiches will continue to be available as part of afternoon refreshments.
3. We will be supplementing our daily green salad option with kid-friendly vegetable sticks.
4. We have added grilled cheese on wheat bread as a new hot food item. Whole wheat bread for cold sandwiches will still be available daily for our campers.
