Cooking Specialty Added / Deerkill Menu Changes

Cooking Added as Specialty
Based on feedback received in parent and camper surveys over the past few years, we ve decided to add Cooking as a new Specialty program here at Deerkill.  This will be our 16th Specialty area following the addition of our Video program in 2009.  We have already hired a Cooking Head who brings years of experience teaching cooking in a camp setting.  Campers will prepare a variety of age-appropriate meals while learning more about the benefits of a healthy and nutritious diet.

New Healthy Menu Items and Changes

We have added several healthy food items to our menu as listed below:

1. Turkey and tuna will be available on a daily basis as a cold-lunch alternative.
2. We will be replacing our dessert options of chocolate pudding and jello with a daily selection of yogurt cups and fresh fruit.  Cookies, ice pops or ice cream sandwiches will continue to be available as part of afternoon refreshments.
3. We will be supplementing our daily green salad option with kid-friendly vegetable sticks.
4. We have added grilled cheese on wheat bread as a new hot food item.  Whole wheat bread for cold sandwiches will still be available daily for our campers.

Video Yearbook Premiere A Rousing Success!

The first-ever Deerkill Day Camp Video Yearbook Premiere was a rousing success!  Nearly 300 campers and their families from Rockland, Bergen, Hoboken, Manhattan, Orange and Montclair attended the can’t-miss event which took place at the Palisades Mall AMC Loews theater on Sunday December 12th.  Greeted with large Oscar statues, a red carpet and even some paparazzi, all the VIP attendees were treated like Hollywood royalty.  The yearbook was preceded by a fun movie trailer and some fun Deerkill trivia of summers past.  Everyone left with a smile on their face along with their very own Oscar statue for playing Supporting Roles in the movie event of 2010.

4TH Annual Family Fall Fest A Huge Hit!

Our annual can’t miss event of Rockland County, the Deerkill Family Fall Fest, once again lived up to its reputation.  More than 750 campers, parents and friends walked away with 450 pumpkins, 600 doughnuts and countless happy memories. The big hit at this year’s Fall Fest was the Kiddiepillar, the 50-foot long inflatable caterpillar for kids – even adults enjoyed it. Congratulations to Harrison G for winning the candy corn guess and a $50 Amazon gift card. His guess was only 6 off the actual total of 372! We’ve posted photos from the event on our website at the following link: http://www.deerkilldaycamp.com/deerkill-families/photo-gallery/. You will have to click on the button that says “Next Screen” and then click on the gallery “Fall Fest 2010.”

What’s New At Deerkill

* Mini-Golf Course – We recently renovated our mini-golf course, framing it with railroad ties, repainting each hole, and adding mulch and stepping stones.  We’re also planning on adding a new surprise obstacle next spring!

* Path Repaving and Court Resurfacing – As soon as the weather permits this spring, we’ll be repaving our parking lots, hockey field, handball courts, lower dodge ball court and walking paths around camp.  We also plan on completing the resurfacing and painting of all of our basketball and volleyball courts as well as our upper hockey field.  We can’t wait to see our campers show their skills on the snazzy new courts.

* Hockey Field Group Signs – We just received our new permanent group signs to be posted on the hockey field for morning and afternoon assembly.  Each camper will feel especially proud as they run to their groups each day.

* Nurse’s Station – Our Nurse’s Station is currently undergoing a renovation that will include new flooring, new furniture and a fresh coat of paint. Campers with boo-boos or bellyaches will be treated in luxury next year.
