Book Release Event at Deerkill

Deerkill will be the setting for the Official Book Release on Sunday, May 2nd from 12pm-3pm of Still Her Spirit Sings, a new book by Deerkill’s very own Head of Nature and local children’s author Robert W. Kurkela. Hi-Tor Animal Shelter will be on hand with animals for adoption. All ages are welcome and admission is FREE. The book will be released in time for Be Kind To Animals Week (5/2-5/8), National Pet Week (5/2-5/8) and Children’s Book Week (5/10-5/16). A percentage of the profits from the sale of the book will go to help animal causes. Robert will be reading from his book, autographing copies and answering questions.

New Playground Structure Upgraded!

We just upgraded our new playground structure! In addition to the crater walls and climbing arches, now there will be multiple slides, play panels and, best of all, the adventure tube! We’re hoping to have it ready for visitors by May – will keep you updated.

New Challenger Playground Planned for Spring

We’re excited to unveil the newest addition to Deerkill’s lower camp – a brand new climbing structure. We bid adieu to our monkey bars and the old water pump to make room for the new playground, which will feature a dozen climbing elements for all ages. We hope to have it installed early spring so visitors can enjoy it prior to camp.

Deerkill Reunion Announced

Earlier this year, Deerkill launched its new online CampMinder database system. This provided us with the ability to email newsletters, statements and updates on special events throughout the summer. It is going to be easier than ever for us to stay in touch, and you are going to love our online photo galleries.

Alumni Database: Our alumni can also visit https://deerkill.campintouch.com/alumni/register2.aspx to register for our alumni community.

Facebook: Last, but not least we will also be sending out invitations for folks to become members of Deerkill’s new Facebook page at www.facebook.com. It’s a wonderful way for our community to interact throughout the year.

Deerkill Apparel: Finally, we launched a new apparel website for camper families who would like to purchase Deerkill logo-ed shirts, shorts, and sweats (in addition to the annual camp-supplied shirt of course). Deerkill Projects Abound

The fall and spring give Bradley and the rest of our maintenance team time to catch up on projects around camp. Here are some of the things we are doing now and planning for the spring:

* Front Entrance Beautification: For those of you who joined us for the Fall Fest, you may have noticed the new landscaping at our front entrance. Come spring, the recently planted junipers, wild grasses and alberta spruces will be surrounded by a canvas of yellow daffodils sure to delight all of our visitors.

* BBQ Area Makeover: We’ve framed our barbeque area with new gravel and railroad ties and added new tables to provide more seating for our campers’ barbeque lunches – franks and burgers never looked so good!

* Parking Lot and Path Renovation: In early spring, our main parking lot and most of our walking paths will be repaved, including a new path between the dining hall and the basketball pavilion. They will look just great.

* Other projects, including new playground equipment, are now being planned – stay tuned…

3rd Annual Deerkill Day Camp Fall Fest A Smashing Success!

The annual world-famous gathering known as the Deerkill Family Fall Fest has become a can’t-miss event on the calendar for our camper families and their friends. Nearly 600 attendees walked away with more than 350 pumpkins, 500 doughnuts and countless happy memories. The big hit at this year’s Fall Fest was the Deerkill Express. The train that ferried children and their parents between upper and lower camp – maybe next year we’ll bring in a hot air balloon – you just never know! Congratulations to Brooke Morgenstein for winning the candy corn guess. She guessed 3,028 when the real total was 3,030! Maybe she arrived early and counted!
