STARS

Day Camp for Kids Entering 10th Grade

Deerkill Day Camp prides itself on our “homegrown” staff. Many of our staff are former Deerkill campers who have progressed through our unique STAR program (Service, Training, Adventure, Responsibility). The Service component of the STAR program involves community service, both on-site (e.g. Project Morry Swim-A-Thon) and off-site (volunteering one day to paint a local playground, etc.). The Training component includes structured fun training in such topics as babysitting, first aid, and interviewing among other areas. The Adventure component entails weekly trips to exciting destinations including two off-site overnights (e.g. Club Getaway and Lake George). View our the STARs Sample Schedule (PDF) for children entering 10th grade. Please note the STARs program is for a minimum of 4 weeks.

My daughter loved how the STAR program gave her a chance to experience the responsibilities of being a counselor while still enjoying the fun of being a camper. It was her favorite summer!

Finally, the Responsibility component comprises the afternoons when our STARs spend time assisting in specialty areas and younger camper groups, observing and gaining counselor skills. Campers in the STAR program will enjoy a swimming period as well as shared group activities with other STAR campers throughout the morning. STARs who are ready to advance become junior counselors the following summer.
